One in ten American adults identify themselves as formerly having a problem with substance use. Given this prevalence, addiction and risky substance use are everybody’s problem. Even if you don’t know it, a family member, friend, or neighbor is probably dealing with current use or maintaining recovery at this time.

The most important thing to know about substance use is that negative consequences can be prevented. There are actions that professionals and nonprofessionals alike can take to help prevent substance use disorders and reduce their harms. Every day, people all over the world access a wide variety of treatment options and follow an infinite number of paths to recovery.
