IRETA’s work on neuromodulation devices was recently featured as part of a poster presentation at the Rx Summit in Nashville, TN.
The poster, Avoiding Industry Influence in Opioid Settlement Spending, outlines key principles to help guide how opioid settlement funds are allocated—emphasizing that investments should be grounded in comparative effectiveness, cost-efficiency, equity, and demonstrated impact on overdose outcomes.
Drawing from peer-reviewed research, federal guidance, and public health literature, the poster highlights high-evidence strategies such as naloxone distribution, low-threshold access to medications for opioid use disorder, syringe services programs, and community-based drug checking. It also examines emerging or lower-evidence interventions—including neuromodulation devices—within this broader context.
For neuromodulation devices specifically, the poster reinforces that while some are FDA-cleared to support withdrawal symptoms, there is limited evidence of effectiveness and no evidence demonstrating reductions in relapse or overdose risk. These considerations are important as states and counties evaluate potential investments.
