
We are proud to share that Peter F. Luongo, Ph.D, former Executive Director of IRETA, has been selected to receive the 2025 James H. Tharp Award from the James H. Tharp Charitable Trust. Dr. Luongo was nominated for the award by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. This annual trust award is given to the individual that has contributed most toward advancing research and treatment in the field of addiction and alcoholism.
Dr. Luongo’s career exemplifies the values this award represents. Over decades of leadership, research, mentorship, and advocacy, he has played a pivotal role in advancing evidence-based substance use disorder treatment and strengthening systems of care. During his 14-year tenure at IRETA, Dr. Luongo helped guide the organization’s growth and establish its continuous quality improvement service team.
Dr. Luongo retired from IRETA in July 2025, leaving behind a legacy of thoughtful leadership, collaboration, and enduring contributions in the field. IRETA is honored to celebrate this well-deserved recognition and extends its heartfelt congratulations.
