Description
The Pittsburgh VA adopted new hospital accreditation and performance measures for inpatient screening for alcohol and tobacco use, brief intervention, referral to treatment, and follow-up. Implementation of the measures and the evaluation of the process itself are occurring in tandem. “Our goal is to develop clinical processes and procedures for addressing these measures that are patient-centered but simultaneously sensitive to the inpatient culture and clinicians’ needs for efficiency. The constant dialogue with stakeholders will allow us to do this.”
All VHA medical centers are expected to be fully compliant with these measures by January 1, 2015.

Dr. Lauren Broyles is a full-time Research Health Scientist and Core Faculty member at the VA Pittsburgh Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP), and Core Investigator with the VA’s VISN 4 Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC). Dr. Broyles also serves as Co-Director of the Pittsburgh site for the VA Office of Academic Affiliations’ Advanced Interprofessional Fellowship in Addictions Treatment. Dr. Broyles is a nurse investigator with advanced training in health services research, and is the recipient of a five-year a VA Career Development Award. Her program of research focuses on alcohol screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) in inpatient and primary care settings. In addition to her research activities, she serves as Chair of the inpatient SBIRT performance measurement implementation team for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Dr. Broyles holds academic appointments as an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Assistant Professor of Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh, and Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing.
