In September 2012, we hit the scene as the new National SBIRT ATTC. That is to say, we are a federally-designated Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) that works to advance the evidence-based practice of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). Our work as an ATTC is funded by a grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
No more acronyms. Here’s what we do:
We are a central resource for information about SBIRT. We train trainers. We present at conferences. We field technical assistance requests. We create online tools. We send notifications about news, research, and opportunities.
And we’re available to you. Your tax dollars fund us.
What is SBIRT?
SBIRT is a public health approach to identifying and addressing at-risk substance use and substance use disorders. For too long, health and human service settings have ignored substance use or–perhaps worse–lectured about it. SBIRT is a sane and responsible middle path. It emphasizes universal screening, non-judgmental conversation, and knowledgeable referral to other resources.
And SBIRT is wonderfully adaptable: it’s used in primary care, emergency rooms, school-based health centers, employee assistance programs, youth development programs, mental health settings, OB/GYN offices, and elsewhere.
