As we mark the 25th anniversary of IRETA, we find ourselves looking back at the journey that brought us here, honoring our roots while embracing the evolution that has propelled us forward. Just as St. Francis Hospital left an indelible mark on the landscape of addiction treatment in western Pennsylvania, IRETA has emerged as a beacon of innovation and compassion in the ever-evolving field of substance use disorder care.
IRETA was envisioned by Dr. Michael T. Flaherty, a visionary clinical psychologist deeply committed to advancing evidence-based addiction treatment practices. In the wake of St. Francis Hospital’s closure, Dr. Flaherty’s foresight and determination laid the foundation for what would become a pioneering force in addiction research, policy, and education.
Over the past quarter-century, IRETA has remained steadfast in its mission to align science, service, and policy in the fight against substance use disorders. From our humble beginnings with seed funding from St. Francis Hospital and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, to our status as a federally recognized training center, IRETA has grown and adapted to meet the evolving needs of individuals and communities impacted by addiction.
Today, as we reflect on our journey, we are humbled by the progress we have made and the lives we have touched. In a landscape still marred by the opioid epidemic and persistent gaps in care, IRETA has remained at the forefront of efforts to promote quality improvement and innovation in addiction services.
Through collaborative partnerships, pioneering research initiatives, and targeted interventions, we have worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between evidence and practice, empowering providers and organizations to deliver more effective, person-centered care. From pioneering telehealth solutions birthed from the need to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic to implementing trauma-informed approaches, IRETA continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in addiction treatment.
As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we are reminded of the countless individuals who have contributed to IRETA’s success over the years. From our dedicated staff and board members to our valued partners and supporters, we owe a debt of gratitude to all who have helped shape our journey.
Looking ahead to the next chapter, we are filled with hope and determination. The need for better responses to substance use disorders has never been more urgent, and IRETA remains committed to leading the charge for change. With a renewed sense of purpose and a steadfast commitment to our mission, we look forward to the next 25 years and beyond, guided by the enduring values of compassion, innovation, and excellence that have defined us from the very beginning. Together, we will continue to build a future where all individuals affected by addiction can access the care and support they need to thrive.
