Description
Every day, there are more than 1,000 opioid-related visits to EDs across America. Although there is not yet a robust evidence-base for SBIRT to address drug use, a recent study suggests that SBIRT in combination with an immediate prescription for buprenorphine can reduce illicit opioid use and increase engagement in addiction treatment. Study
author Gail D’onofrio of the Yale School of Medicine will discuss SBIRT as it connects to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorders.
Presenter
Presenter Gail D’onofrio is internationally known for her work in screening ED patients for alcohol and other drug use, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) She has received 2 NIAAA RO1 grants for ED practitioner-performed brief interventions for harmful and hazardous drinking. She is also PI on a NIDA RO1 for SBIRT for patients with opioid dependence and the PI on a UO1 from SAMHSA that trains residents in all primary care specialties on SBIRT.
She routinely sits on review panels for NIDA, NIAAA and NHLBI. She is a founding member, representing Emergency Medicine, on the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
