Mark Lanyon and Peter Booras will describe how Project Engage began as a peer program for the emergency department at Christiana Care in Delaware and evolved into a financially sustainable hospital system-funded program with improved outcomes through long-term recovery.
Presenter
Mark DeWitt Lanyon, Ph.D., ICADC, ICCDPD, LCDP, LPC is currently the Clinical Program Manager of Project Engage. He is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional, a Licensed Professional Counselor, an Internationally Certified Co-Occurring Disorders Professional, and an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. During his 15 year career at Brandywine Counseling and Community Services (BCCS) he was Program Director of seven different programs (including overseeing Project Engage part time). In 2012 he left Brandywine Counseling to serve as the Statewide Director of Substance Abuse Treatment in the Delaware Prison System. He left the prison system to work at an inpatient substance use treatment facility in order to continue working with patients. When the full time position as Clinical Program Manager of Project Engage became available, he left the inpatient agency and returned to BCCS and Project Engage to follow his passion to assist patients struggling with the challenges of addiction be set free and become the whole, healthy person they deserve to be. This is accomplished by mentoring, training, and providing clinical oversight to the incredible group of Engagement Specialists he has the honor of working with on a daily basis.
Peter Booras, CPRS is an Engagement Specialist at Brandywine Counseling and Community Services. He has been involved in recovery from substance use disorders for 26 years which has included helping/working with hundreds of people who were interested in becoming comfortably abstinent from substances. He has education and training in drug and alcohol counseling along with experience making referrals to community based treatment providers. He has used 12 step groups, counseling, and mental health treatment to achieve over eleven years of continuous abstinence. He uses his personal experience with active addiction, relapse, and various modes of treatment to build rapport with his clients. This can help them open up about their current issues and give them hope for a better future. He helps ensure coordination between medical and substance use disorder treatment, and also adds a unique perspective to the discussion about addiction.
