SBIRT and the Electronic Health Record: Featuring Tom McLellan

Description

The presentation will discuss issues in promoting use of SBI and RT by medical practitioners, specifically the opportunities and challenges of integrating SBI and RT into contemporary electronic health record systems.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of EHR systems for integrating SBIRT into standard practice
  • Understand the special federal protections concerning interactions between healthcare providers about substance use and addiction
  • Understand the billing requirements and regulations associated with SBI in healthcare settings

Presenter

Dr. McLellan has been a career researcher for 35 years with the Treatment Research Institute.  He has published over 400 articles and chapters on addiction research; and has received several distinguished awards. During 2009 – 2011 Dr. McLellan was the Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, where he co-authored the President’s National Drug Control Strategy. Dr. McLellan holds a B.A. from Colgate University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College.  He received postgraduate training in psychology at Oxford University in England.
