SBIRT the Nitty Gritty: Implementing SBIRT in Multiple Nursing Settings

Description

Goal – Review four Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) implementation projects for nursing students and professionals.

Objectives

  • Describe SBIRT implementation across four Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded projects.
  • Review the results of SBIRT implementation, professional perceptions and qualitative data for HRSA funded SBRIT projects
  • Explain barriers and successes for implementation

The National SBIRT ATTC has partnered the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing on multiple SBIRT training programs for university nursing students and professional EDRNs and Dental Anesthetists working in underserved regions. The project goals, barriers, successes and results will be presented. The importance of patient level data and serving patients with co-occurring physical health conditions will also be discussed..

Presenter

Holly Hagle, PhD is the Director of the National SBIRT Addiction Technology Transfer Center and oversees all of the training, educational initiatives and curriculum development.

Ann Mitchell, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN is Associate Professor, Vice-Chair for Admin., Health and Community Systems at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She is the Project Director (PI) on a HRSA-funded grant designed to teach Emergency Department RNs(EDRNs) the evidence-based practice of SBIRT for patients who use or misuse alcohol and/or other drugs.

Dawn Lindsay, PhD, completed her graduate work in clinical psychology at the University of Cincinnati in 2002 and was on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh until joining IRETA. She has eight years of experience conducting NIDA- and NIAAA-funded research in the area of adolescent substance use disorders and is a member of American Psychological Association and the American Evaluation Association.

Kimberly Talcott, MPA has over five years experience implementing federally-funded projects, five on SBIRT specifically. She has worked for nonprofit social service organizations and educational institutions as a project manager and grant writer. .
