Sex, Gender, and Screening for Alcohol Use – Time for a Change

Written by Marla Kauffman | January 7, 2022

Drinking limits in the U.S. make a distinction between cis men and women, but the evidence that supports using these categories is murky. When screening tools ask patients to choose between these two dichotomous categories, they exclude those who identify as trans, intersex, or non-binary. This presentation will look into the relationship between sex, gender, and alcohol morbidity, and discuss how these tools might evolve to include all patients

Presenter

Jim Winkle, MPH has trained hundreds of providers and clinical team members how to address substance use with primary care and emergency medicine patients. As the creator behind the SBIRT Oregon website, Jim has designed screening forms, clinic tools and training videos used by health professionals across the country.
